Pre-Operative Instructions for Oral Surgery and General Anesthesia
Asleep for Surgery
- Do not eat or drink anything for 6 hours prior to your surgery, including water. This is very important for your safety. Your surgery may be cancelled if this instruction is not followed.
- A responsible adult 18 years of age or older must accompany you to the surgery and stay here during the entire appointment. A taxi service is not acceptable. Your escort must also drive you home and be available to stay with you for the remainder of the day.
- Do not drive, operate any machinery, or make critical decisions for 24 hours after having general anesthesia.
- Wear loose fitting clothing the day of surgery, preferably short sleeved shirts.
- Do not wear contact lenses on the day of your surgery.
- No nail polish or acrylic nails on the day of your surgery.
- Have a normal meal the evening before your surgery. Avoid alcohol for 48 hours before your surgery, illicit drugs and marijuana usage for 72 hours before your surgery.
- Get a good night's rest the day prior to your surgery.
- Take your medications as instructed by your surgeon.
- Post-operative instructions will be reviewed with your escort on the day of your surgery.
